Create a new product

The following is how to create a new Product in Wholechain. Products are the basis of tracing your supply chain, and traceability events can only be logged if you have set up products in your account.

1
Navigate to the Products page from the left-side menu
2
Click Actions > Add
3
A drawer will appear on the right indicating all of the information you will need to fill in:
  • Product Name and Product Identifier: The name you assign to a product can be anything that will help your team identify the product at hand. It could just be a short description or include an internal SKU number.

  • Identifier Type: You have the option to choose between using the products Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) or use a different source for the item number by clicking Other. If you choose to use GTIN, you can select if you are creating a product using your trading partner's registered GS1 GTIN.
  • Default Blockchain: The default blockchain that you select for a product means that all blockchain events (Commission, Decommission, Send and Receive) containing this product will automatically be written to the blockchain selected. At the moment there are two blockchains Wholechain support, and the number of  blockchain confirmations included in your plan can be found in the Settings page under Plans and Billing.
  • Lot vs. Serial Traceability: There are two core types of traceability to select from that Wholechain enables - lot-based, as well as serialized traceability. You can read a more detailed explanation of the difference between them in a separate article, but here's a basic overview:
    • Lot-based means you're tracing items through the supply chain based on their lot number - which is a group of products that are associated, typically based on their harvest date or production run.
    • Serial traceability is when you're tracing one single individual product that is differentiated from all other products based on a serial number. Examples would be a car or a smartphone.
    • Learn more about Lot vs. Serial Traceability here.
  • Defined Units: Use this if each lot will contain identical items, e.g. 10 lb cases.
  • Unit of Measure (UOM): Choose what unit of measure is applicable to your product.
  • Product Data Sharing Policy: Choose what type of data sharing policy you would like to use for this product (Open Data Sharing or Restricted Data Sharing). You can read more about data sharing in this article.
