Aggregate: The Strategy for Efficient Product Grouping in the Supply Chain

An Aggregate event involves the systematic grouping of multiple distinct products into a single logistical unit for the purpose of streamlined shipping or storage. This process is crucial in supply chain management, as it enhances efficiency and organization. Each product within the aggregate is identified using a specific identifier, such as a pallet or container number, which allows for easy tracking and management throughout the shipping or storage process.

The aggregation process serves multiple purposes:

  1. Simplified Inventory Management: Aggregation provides a clear structure for inventory control, making it easier to monitor stock levels and manage warehousing space.
  2. Streamlined Processing: Having products aggregated allows for quicker sorting, handling, and processing upon arrival at the destination, thus accelerating the supply chain.
  3. Intention for Disaggregation: Importantly, aggregation is typically a temporary event. There is a clear intention to disaggregate the items later in the supply chain for distribution to consumers. This allows businesses to tailor deliveries according to demand while maintaining a high level of operational flexibility.

How Aggregation Works in Wholechain:

At Wholechain, we provide an intuitive approach to product aggregation, enabling seamless management through the following straightforward steps:

  1. Select and Group: Begin by selecting multiple product items to create an aggregation that groups them while preserving their individual attributes. This ensures that each item retains its unique specifications, essential for effective inventory management and traceability.
  2. Assign Logistical Units: Once the aggregation is established, we allow for assignments to a logistical unit or a Serialized Shipping Container Code (SSCC) for efficient shipping. This simplifies accurate tracking of shipments, ensuring that all items are accounted for during transportation.
  3. Manage as a Cohesive Unit: The aggregated product can be transferred, sent, or stored as a single unit, offering flexibility in logistics and inventory management. This approach enhances the ability to monitor aggregated items, increasing visibility throughout the supply chain.
  4. Reversible Aggregation: A defining feature of Wholechain is the reversibility of aggregations. At any time, we can disaggregate items back into their original forms, providing significant flexibility to adapt to changing demands and customer needs.

In summary, Wholechain's aggregation process simplifies product management, enhances logistical efficiency, and ensures complete visibility and traceability throughout the supply chain, paving the way for streamlined operations and improved customer satisfaction.

Examples:

  • 50 cartons of strawberries are aggregated and loaded onto a pallet for shipment, later to be disaggregated back into the original 50 cartons of strawberries.
  • 100 cases of bottled olive oil are aggregated and loaded into a shipping container for export. The individual cases will later be disaggregated back into the original 100 cases at the destination warehouse

Navigating Aggregate in Wholechain

1
Navigate to the Products page from Wholechain's left-side menu, and click on the product whose items you'd like to aggregate.
2
Using the checkboxes on the left side of Current Inventory table, select the item(s) you wish to aggregate and click Actions > Aggregate.

3
You'll be able to select the quantities of the input items you're aggregating, so enter the quantity in case you only want to send part of a line item. Next assign the aggregation a logistical unit ID (such as an SSCC), and select the date of the aggregation. Finally, add any optional identifiers per the product settings.

4
Click Log Event, and after the record is written to the blockchain, your aggregation will appear in the Current Inventory list, but will have a "+" icon that you can click to view the contents of the aggregation. Now you can treat the aggregated product just like a single product item and log events with it such as Ship or Disaggregate

Note: Each time you log an Aggregate event, only one event record is written to the blockchain. When you disaggregate the items, the number of blockchain confirmations will match the number of items you are disaggregating. Learn more about how blockchain confirmations are calculated here
