What is Sourceview?

Sourceview is Wholechain's supply chain storytelling tool that enables you to highlight the players and activities that comprise each step of your product's journey. By simply reading a QR code with a smartphone camera (no app required), a trading partner or end-customer gets an instantaneous and user-friendly summary of your supply chain, customized entirely by you to tell the compelling stories behind your products.

Sourceview consists of two main features: Profiles and Collections. Both features include an easy-to-use editor tool, where you can control a number of visual and textual elements that let you tell your product's story in a simple, highly customizable way:

  • Profiles in Sourceview typically tell the story of a single supply chain of a product. Using profiles is a great way to give in-depth information to the consumer about your individual product and its story.
    • Example: A Seafood Company is tracking their sockeye salmon using Wholechain and wants to use Sourceview to illustrate a the journey the salmon takes to get from source to consumer. The company chooses to create a profile showcasing this product’s supply chain journey, which includes a story about the fishermen, a video of the processing plant, a map displaying the journey geographically, and some suggested recipes for preparing the salmon.
  • Collections are a feature that enable users to group a number of sub-profiles under one “master” profile, which we call a collection. Here are a few scenarios in which you might use this feature:
    • A collection representing a brand highlights all the different products in your line (which would be the sub-profiles)
      • Example: A Seafood Company creates a collection showcasing their brand, with a "List" tab showing their different salmon products as profiles such as keta salmon, sockeye salmon, and arctic salmon. Each of the different types of salmon will have its own profile, grouped together under the brand's collection.
    • One product is a collection and the ingredients would be its sub-profiles
      • Example: A chocolate company creates a collection for their chocolate bars which compiles all of the main ingredients' profiles with their own varying supply chains - milk, sugar and cocoa.
    • A collection contains a search tab, where consumers can enter a lot code to learn a specific product story (sub-profile)
      • Example: A coffee company sets up a collection for their coffee bean products and includes the ability to trace the consumer’s specific product's supply chain using the Lot Search feature. The consumer would enter the lot code found on the coffee bag, and the collection will pull up the story and journey of that specific production lot.

After creating and finalizing your profiles and collections, there few ways to view and share your profiles and collections. One of the options is viewing a Sourceview profile with a QR code. It is extremely simple, and requires no app downloads - only a smartphone with a camera and internet connection. This is how customers can access your supply chain storytelling at the point of sale - i.e. the retail store, or on packaging itself. It can also be used on your website other marketing communications.
