Commission: The First Step in Your Traceability Journey

A Commission event signifies the beginning of a product’s journey within the traceability framework. It establishes the product’s identity and connects it to the entire supply chain, laying the groundwork for transparency and accountability. This critical step typically occurs during key moments, such as the harvest or the product's initial documentation. By capturing essential information early, commissioning ensures that product records are accurate and reliable, facilitating effective tracking throughout the product's life cycle. Furthermore, the record of the commissioned product is securely written onto the blockchain, clearly demonstrating the origin point within the supply chain.

When Does Commissioning Occur?

Commissioning typically takes place at pivotal stages within the supply chain. The most common instances include:

  • Harvest Stage: When the product is first gathered or produced.
  • Initial Documentation: The first time a product is logged as its own entity within your system.

These moments are essential for ensuring complete traceability and integrity of product records.

How to Commission a Product:

To successfully document a Commission event in your Wholechain account, follow these steps:

  1. Access Your Products Page: Log in to your Wholechain account and navigate to the Products page.
  2. Select Add Product: Click on the Actions button located on the right side of the screen and select Add Product from the drop-down menu.
  3. Fill in Product Details and Document the Commission Event: Enter all required information for the product, including its name, type, origin information, and relevant details about the commission event, such as the harvest date.
  4. Save Your Changes: Once you have entered all necessary information, save your updates to officially create the commission event for the product.
  5. Verify Product in Your List: After saving, you will see the newly commissioned product listed in your Products page, confirming that the commission event has been recorded successfully.

By understanding what a Commission event is and following these steps, you can effectively manage your products' traceability journey. Proper commissioning not only enhances the integrity of your records but also promotes transparency within your supply chain from the very start.

Commission a product item manually:

1
Navigate to the Products page from Wholechain's left-side menu, and click on the product you'd like to commission an item of.
2
Click Commission in the top right corner of the page

3
You'll have the option to select a Custom Data Template, either that you've created previously or received from a Company in your Network. If you do not wish to include any custom data, simply select "None."
4
To type in the traceability data for this item, select Manual as your data entry method and fill in all the required fields that appear below with details that capture the Commission event you are logging.
5
Click Log Event and the product will appear in the Current Inventory tab for the product you've just commissioned. Now the item is ready for the next traceability event in its journey downstream.

Commission product items via CSV Upload:

More often than not, it's not practical to commission one instance of a product at a time, so our easy upload tool lets you commission up to 50 records at a time from a CSV file at one time. Here's how it works:

1

Navigate to the Products page from Wholechain's left-side menu, and click on the product you'd like to commission an item of.

2

Click Commission in the top right corner of the page.

3
You'll have the option to select a Custom Data Template, either that you've created previously or received from a Company in your Network. If you do not wish to include any custom data, simply select "None."
4
Select CSV Upload and an upload field will appear.

4
Select Download CSV Template and a CSV file will download to your computer containing column headers that match the fields of the template you've selected, as well as the primary ID, quantity, commission date and optional identifiers of the selected product.
5
Fill in the CSV template with all of the requested Commission data, and save the file. Each row will result in a commissioned item in your Current Inventory for that product.

6
Upload the CSV by either dropping the file into the upload field or clicking Drop Here to Upload. The data should automatically appear in this space for you to review.
Please note the table is editable, so you can make any necessary changes right there inside the table window. Ensure that the dates are correctly formatted (YYYY-MM-DD).

7
Click Log Event, and the items will appear in the Current Inventory tab for the product type you've just commissioned. Now, these items are ready for the next traceability events in their journey downstream.
