Item Number/ID
What is a Primary Product ID?
A Primary Product ID is a unique identifier assigned to a product within the Wholechain system. It serves as the internal reference for a product, ensuring that it can be identified uniquely and consistently across all operations. This ID is essential for managing products, aggregating data, and streamlining traceability within your supply chain.
The Primary Product ID acts as a key piece of information that links all related data and events to a specific product. By relying on this ID, you ensure that each product remains traceable throughout its journey in the supply chain, minimizing errors and redundancy.
Why is the Primary Product ID Important?
- Uniqueness: The Primary Product ID is unique to each product, ensuring there is no ambiguity when referencing items.
- Internal Consistency: It is used internally within the Wholechain system to manage products effectively.
- Simplified API Operations: API calls require only the Primary Product ID to reference a product, eliminating the need to provide other attributes (e.g., product name, description) repeatedly.
- Traceability: It serves as the anchor for all traceability events involving that product, including aggregations, transfers, and disaggregations.
Adding a New Product
To assign a Primary Product ID to a new product in the Wholechain UI:
- Go to the Products section in the main navigation.
- Click on the Actions button.
- Select Add Product from the dropdown menu.
- In the Add Product form, you will see the Item Number/ID field.
- This is where you can assign or input the Primary Product ID (internal product ID).
Once you save the product, this ID becomes the unique reference for that product within the Wholechain system.
Viewing or Editing an Existing Product’s ID
To view or edit the Primary Product ID of an existing product:

- Hover over the Actions button

- Here, you can view or edit the existing Primary Product ID.
How Does it Work?
When a product is created in your Wholechain account, a Primary Product ID is assigned or defined. This ID becomes the main reference point for that product in all future actions and traceability events.
For example:
•Product Item Code: P00123
•Name: Atlantic Salmon Fillet
•Unit of Measure: KGM
Here, P00123 is the Primary Product ID. For any subsequent operations—whether aggregations, transfers, or API calls—this ID alone is used to identify the product.
