What is a Template in Wholechain?

A Template represents a specific, customized set of KDEs (Key Data Elements) you can capture when logging events in your supply chain. Templates allow you to accurately show the uniqueness of your supply chain and align custom data needs across stakeholders. Common uses for custom data templates are:

  • Capturing data related to sustainability metrics or ethical practices
  • Regulatory or certification data
  • Purchase Order, tracking or other logistics references needed by trading partners

After creating a new template, you can share it with other companies in your Network as well as receive and use other companies’ templates as a “User”. Templates can be used in specific supply chain events: Commission, Decommission, Ship, Receive and Transform (all events except for Aggregate and Disaggregate). Depending on the event type, the way you add custom data can vary - learn more about this here

Custom data captured in templates is additional to the core details included in every event. This additional data is more specific information regarding the product and its journey that may be required by or helpful to your trading partners.

For example, in a sockeye salmon harvest (Commission event), here are the basic traceability data elements:

  • Lot ID, Quantity (Lbs), Commission Location, Commission Date

Here’s an example of custom data that might be included in a template for this event:

  • Vessel Registration Number, Vessel ID, FAO Catch Area, Vessel Trip Start/End Date, Species, Best Before Date
